A Brief History
The Laity of Korattur had to fulfill their Sunday obligation commuting a long way by bus or
train to
Ayanavaram, Ambattur or Perambur in the late 1970's. The infant Jesus Church was started
in Korattur
as a sub-station of Ambattur. Initially Sunday Mass was held in a shed. The Parish
Priest Fr. V.M.
Thomas bought the land on which the present church stands and Sunday Masses were held in a
leaky
shed.
When Fr. P.J. Lawrence Raj took charge, he built churches both at Mannurpet and
Korattur
Infant Jesus Church was blessed by His Grace Most Casimir Gnanadickam S.J. on 7th April 1990
and the
belfry was blessed by the Most Rev. Dr. R. Arulapapa, retired Archbishop of
Madras-Mylapore. In 1991,
this Church became a separate parish. To commemorate the Jubilee year, 2000 a grotto was
built by
Fr. Chinnappa Carasala. Later a shopping complex was added. This church attracts the
Protestants and
Hindus of this area who are frequent visitors.
